The Flaming Lips Cover the Beatles Dressed as Wizard of Oz Characters – #MusicMonday Artist

“How do I feel by the end of the day?”…Flaming-Lips-Artist-of-the-Week-Music-Monday

Jimmy Kimmel Live. Hollywood Boulevard. On Halloween. Its hard to imagine a better setting in the world to see The Flaming Lips cover The Beatles while wearing Wizard of Oz costumes. But this wasn’t yours or my imagination, it was totally real, despite what the drugs you took that day made you think. It was a great way to promote the band’s 14th studio album, With a Little Help from My Fwends, a track-by-track tribute to The Beatles album Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Songs performed were “With a Little Help From My Friends” and “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds

Spotify’s Halloween Themed #ThrowbackThursday Playlist

Run, run, run, run
run, run, run awaaaaaaay…

Throwback-Thursday-Halloween-Spotify

Yeah, it’s not #MusicMonday yet, but it’s fuckin’ Halloween and I bet a lot of you out there will be throwing fantastic parties (I know Seattle will be wild), so I thought I’d share this week’s Halloween themed #ThrowbackThursday playlist from Spotify. Rock it at your own party, at a reasonable volume, its not all really dance music, just Halloween themed. Even better, stream it off my website (its great for traffic numbers).

Be warned it is Spotify, so ads will play every so many songs, buuuut for those of you who have the subscription it will of course be ad free.

Ryan Adams’ Self Titled – #MusicMonday Co-Album of the Week

“Got nothin to say, got nothin’ to prove”
– I Just Might

Ryan-Adams-Music-Monday-Album-of-the-week

I’ve always been a fan of Ryan Adams, although I hadn’t really heard much of his music until…like yesterday. Back in the day my dad had some Whiskeytown albums and Adams really stood out on those (I especially like their cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams). It wasn’t til Old School came out on DVD and I watched it roughly eighty times that I found out his actual name. Adams’ song To Be Young (Is To Be Sad, Is To Be High) was the first song played in that comedy classic by the way.

I’ve had a couple musician friends, who don’t know each other, gush over Ryan Adams latest album in recent weeks. I really trust their opinion and knew I had to give it a go, and so yesterday finally gave it a listen and I’m very much hooked (hence the live version of Kim I posted).

Ladies and gentleman, Ryan Adams self-titled album, released September 8th, 2014.

Revisiting Green Day’s Nimrod – #MusicMonday Co-Album of the Week

“I’m just a grouch sitting on a couch,
The world owes me so fuck you”
– The Grouch

Greenday-Music-Monday-Album-of-the-week

The other day I was at work driving a Porsche that I could barely fit in. I’m a sizable dude, so squeezing into some of the vehicles that I do at my job (I’m a valet/bellman at a ridiculously nice hotel in Seattle) can be a sizable strain. But in this situation I was almost tempted to stay in the car for an extra minute. The song on the radio was “Hitchin’ a Ride“, from Green Day‘s Nimrod album, my favorite from the band (although Dookie has to be a close second).

Hearing that song for the first time in years made me think about how much I listened to that album back in 1997 (it was released September 22nd of that year). Hell, I didn’t like Hitchin’ a Ride back when, and eventually grew to actually dislike the album for a minute after I saw “Time of Your Life” on the Seinfeld finale.  But now I remember. Songs like “The Grouch“, “Platypus – I Hate You” and “Prosthetic Head” had me then, have me now.

Its kinda funny, over the last week or two I’ve been checking out Spotify‘s Top 100 list, which is more or less all new to me (yeah I was pretty anti-radio for a while there) cause I wanted to see what kind of newer music I would like (which there was a lot more than I expected), and this album sounds pretty fuckin’ hardcore in comparison to whats big these days.

Anyways, here it is: Greenday’s Nimrod, the co-album of the week (along with Ryan Adams self-titled that I’m about to post too):

Snoop Dogg – #MusicMonday Artist of the Week

And when we rock up on the mic, we rock the mic (right)
For all my doggs keepin’ y’all in health
Just to see you smile and enjoy yourself…

43 years ago today Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr, aka Snoop Dogg, aka Snoop Doggy Dogg, aka Snoop Lion, aka DJ Snoopadelic, aka Snoopzilla, was born in Long Beach, California.

As a youngster it didn’t take longer than a few seconds after I heard Snoop Dogg mutter the phrase “bow wow wow yippy yo yippy yay, Doggy Dogg’s in the muthafuckin’ house”on Fuck Wit Dre Day to become a fan.

It wasn’t just his music, but his persona of a tall, chain chronic smokin’, incredibly smooth and effortlessly cool “gangster” that grabbed me. Even in 1992, with the public outcry against “gangster rap”being reignited, I wasn’t able to see how he was a bad guy for trying to entertain people.

In celebration of his birthday, heres one of my favorite rap albums of all-time: Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle. Click on the link below the music feed to go to a great video of Snoop Dogg talking about one of his craziest party experiences ever.

Thom Yorke’s Birthday Playlist by DouBle B – #MusicMonday Artist of the Week

Just cuz you feel it, doesn’t mean its there…

Thom-Yorke-Music-Monday

October 7th is Thom Yorke‘s birthday. So I am happily somewhat obligated to go with this birthday theme that I already did with the Bruce Springsteen / Bill Murray #MusicMonday post two weeks ago.

Thom Yorke is the lead singer of Radiohead and Atoms for Peace, many of you may very well know who he is and adamantly hate his and his multiple bands’ music. He has that effect on people. Personally I think he’s fucking brilliant. So I made him (and you) a special playlist for his birthday, from what was available on Spotify.

Happy fucking birthday Thommy Boy!
